I Social Studies 8 Course Outline
This introductory Social Studies course will examine a number of selected European and Asian civilizations. It will also review and introduce selected geographic fundamentals. Vocabulary and skills will be taught that will be necessary for future social studies courses. Class discussions, current events charts and group work will be emphasized.

II Social Studies 8 Course Expectations
a. Materials- 3 Ring Binder; Dividers; pens and pencils, ruler
b. Notebook -organized into sections, questions to be answered in full complete sentences
c. Lates and Absences-expected to be in class and ready to start the lesson when the bell rings!!
d. Too many classes missed will result in mark loss and possible failure!!
e. Use your agenda to write down homework and classroom assignments. Homework will be checked and recorded. Low marks will result if homework is not completed. Your group will suffer if you do not contribute to the group effort!!
f. The teacher will be available for consultation and extra work-(help) Just ask!!

Group Project: Canada's Military Effort to the Arabian Sea

The class will be divided into 2 groups

I

a. Discuss the route of HMCS. Vancouver that will leave Vancouver Island and reach the Arabian Sea. (New Item!! (HMCS Vancouver will continue with its scheduled particpation in a military exercise off San Diego!!(California)

-1. What ocean and wind currents will challenge this ship? What happens if your ship experiences the El Nino effect?

2. Estimate the time it will take to reach the Arabian Sea.

3. How many kilometres will the voyage take? Latitude and Longitude? Time Zones?What happens when you pass the International Date Line in the middle of the Pacific Ocean? Is it the same thing as crossing the Equator?

4. Would like to be on this ship? Why or Why not? Training Activities? Costs?

5. List in order the oceans, seas ,straits, water bodies your ship will pass on its voyage.

6. How fast will your ship travel(Hint 50 km per hour??) Can it keep up this speed all the time?? What happens if the waters become too rough or too warm?

7. What activities will be accomplished on your trip? How many troops will be come homesick or seasick??

8. How many participants are women? Are they given combat responsibilities? Should they?

 

II Ships from Halifax, Nova Scotia will also be sent to the Arabian Sea to help with the fight against Terrorism.

N.B. NEWS FLASH!! A MAJOR STORM IS OFF THE COAST OF NOVA SCOTIA THAT MAY DELAY THE SHIPS HEADED TO THE MIDDLE EAST!! ( REMEMBER THE MOVIE THE PERFECT STORM!!)

1. What ocean and wind currents will challenge your fleet? (North Atlantic Ocean; Mediterranean Sea)

2. Estimate the time of arrival of your fleet. Destination:Arabian Sea or Persian Gulf (why?)

3. How many kilometres will your voyage take? Latitude and Longitude ? How many Time Zones?

4. Describe the living conditions on board and what training exercises would you go through?

5. Can your fleet go through the Suez Canal? How would you find out? This canal is controlled by an Islamic nation-would this be a problem? Why or why not?

Other factors in this voyage?? Costs?
6. What will the air and water temperatures be in the Arabian Sea in December. Will this be a factor on the spirit and confidence level of Canadians?
7. Are any women in the Anti-Terrorism unit? How are women treated in the Talabin area of Afghanistan? Does Canada have a right to change this behaviour?
